In 2016, in the wake of the tragic fire at Oakland’s DIY arts and music space, Ghost Ship, Meow Wolf established an annual DIY Fund to assist and help ensure the safety and sustainability of similar venues around the world.

About the Meow Wolf DIY Fund

Our DIY Fund is an annual fund with an open call for applications each year. An application is required to receive funding. We are currently working on dates for our 2019 Fund to be announced on our website later this year.

Meow Wolf has been a DIY arts and music community since 2008. We know how difficult it is to operate an alternative venue that builds authentic creative community. We know the pressures to homogenize and be absorbed into disconnected, cookie-cutter ways of living and existing.

We stand in solidarity with DIY communities and recognize that they are a critical component to a healthy society – our DIY Fund will continue to support art communities for years to come.

Through the DIY Fund, small community art spaces receive grant money to pay for everything from infrastructure improvements to rent. In 2017, we awarded more than $215,000 to 106 DIY spaces across the country.

DIY Fund Impact

In 2017, Meow Wolf’s annual DIY Fund made its first payout of $215,000 directly to DIY community art and music spaces across the country. Selected from among hundreds of applicants, Meow Wolf helped 106 small-scale arts organizations in 21 different states with rent, infrastructure, safety improvements, materials, and equipment.

Our 2018 DIY Fund receipients have been notified! We are proud to have increased the number of organizations we’ve supported. Further details are coming soon!

Many of the organizations we support do not receive outside grants, so our DIY Fund is a one of a kind support mechanism. For the majority of our decade-long history, Meow Wolf lived on the fringes of Santa Fe in a series of small DIY venues. Now, we’re paying it forward through our DIY Fund annual program.

Meow Wolf plans to continue the DIY Fund for years to come. One of our goals is to increase the number of applicants and amount of funding that is awarded each year, while increasing awareness for the value of DIY art and music spaces in our communitites. We receive hundreds of request each year, making the DIY Fund a competative process.

We’re excited to announce that our goal this year is to give $250,000 to DIY arts and music spaces across the United States. This year’s DIY Fund application will launch in Summer 2019 with recipients selected, and funding presented, in early 2020. Please stay check back regularly for exact dates and updates.

DIY Fund Application

Meow Wolf’s DIY Fund is an annual fund, with a required application to receive funding. 2019 DIY Fund dates are to be announced and we anticipate late summer, please check back regularly for updates.

To apply, please be an existing arts or music space that receives less than $50,000 in funding per year. To receive funding, applicants must tell us about their history, have an actual space where creativity occurs with a community of people, and specify their outward community impact. We will consider any type of creative community; visual, music venue, performance, etc. Please note, this fund is geared toward existing spaces, and not projects.
